Do you OVERDELIVER to your members or do you just deliver the minimum?

Hey there 🙂  First off, thanks so much for all of the well wishes this week.  My household is starting to get healthy once again.  Tallie’s pnemonia seems much better, Noah’s ear infection is clearing up, Dr. Robyn’s cold is getting better and my bronchitis is slowly (and i do mean slowly) vanishing 🙂

What are you doing to OVERDELIVER to your clients and add value to their lives on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis?

As a school / gym / club / studio owner your members expect to get a fantastic physical eduction.  Let’s face it, if you’ve gone through the hassle and expense to open up a business teaching the skills you teach, people expect you to be great at it.  Being great at it though, is the absolute minimum you can do for your people.

Are YOU Doing only the minimum…or do you OverDeliver?

Here are a few suggestions to provide extra value to your people:

1.)  Create an experience with every class you offer. Think about the “image-sensory package” of your facility (this is something I usually speak about in my courses) and make sure that everything about your facility (the way it looks, sounds, smells, feels, and yes…even tastes) shows that you care about your folks:

a.)  Your parking lots are easy to maneuver and offer easy (well lit) access to your facility.
b.)  Your lobby/entrance area is clean, professional and inviting.  It should basically say to anybody who walks in, “we’re happy you’re here and we’ll treat you like you deserve to be treated here!”
c.)  Your bathrooms should be clean and neat.  If you really want to overdeliver – go visit a spa and check out their bathrooms/locker rooms…model those!
d.)  Your staff is always dressed professionally and appropriately and always has a smile on their faces.
e.)  Your staff goes out of their way to ensure that everybody leaves with a smile on their face…excited to come back for their next visit.
f.)  Your parents viewing area is a welcome haven for parents to enjoy the classes without disturbing or disrupting anybody.  Comfy chairs, coffee maker, a staff member in “hearing” distance to ensure you know of everything going on 🙂
g.)  Your classes are well run, punctual, and effective.  Everybody appreciates the fact that you go out of your way to get the results you promised when they joined.

2.)  Be More than a physical education center:

a.)  If you promise to help develop the character of your students – DELIVER ON THAT PROMISE. (in fact, this is why so many folks jump aboard Powerful Words Character Development, since we provide everything you need to successfully do this!)  Let’s face it…you have a curriculum for the physical skills you teach, right?  Well, if you REALLY want to professionally teach personal development, why not use the system that is PROVEN to develop the character of your members?  Powerful Words is that system 🙂
b.)  Educate the parents AND the students. When you provide helpful information for the parents, they see the value of membership at your facility.  (You can always use the Parents Perch and the Dear Dr. Robyn exactly for this purpose)
c.)  Become the Personal Development Resource that your community so sorely needs.
d.)  Trail blaze in your community – become a leader and show your community how to live their lives with character.  It’s amazing how soon your facility will become recognized as “The Personal Development Center”, regardless of the physical skills you offer.

3.)  Connect on a personal level:
a.)  Offer more than just “classes” and “teams”…offer them a “home away from home”.  This means that your facility is their gathering point – a place where they’re always comfortable and always welcome.
b.)  Celebrate holidays together and break bread. It’s been my experience that the facilities who “party” together build nice, strong bonds.  Holiday parties, theme parties and other ways to socialize as a big “family” will serve to create a spectacular connection with your current members as well as their families and friends.
c.)  Postcards are like gold – find a reason to send your people postcards (yes, actual post cards that you write on and put a stamp on and mail!)  People appreciate it like you wouldn’t believe.
d.)  Pick up the phone and call them…especially when it has nothing to do with money.  Let them know they did a great job in class, or that you missed them, or that you were sorry to hear about their grandma Sue.  Just do it.  You’ll both be glad you did.

How to get more Referrals – a whole bunch of action steps for you!

It’s a beautiful, sunny day here in NJ – aside from the fact that my daughter Tallie has pnemonia, my son Noah has an ear infection, Dr. Robyn’s got a cold, and I’ve got bronchitis.  Yuck.

That being said, I still wanted to share some goodies with you today.

This morning, in between coughing fits, I was speaking with one of my platinum coaching clients, and we were discussing some valuable systems to help her increase her word of mouth referrals (that’s currently her #1 lead generation vehicle, so that’s where she likes to focus her energy).

Here’s the Cliffs Notes version of our conversation:

Most people don’t get enough referrals because they either:

a.)  Don’t Deserve Them “if you want to be remarked about, you must be REMARKABLE!”

b.)  Most owners/instructors/coaches don’t tend to ask for referrals on a regular basis.

c.)  Most owners/instructors/coaches don’t have a systemized method for collecting the referrals.

d.)  Most owners/instructors/coaches don’t have a systemized method for following up with the people who were referred to them.

e.)  Most owners/instructors/coaches don’t have enough “social proof” to help make it commonplace for your members to WANT TO refer their friends.

f.)  Most owners/instructors/coaches don’t have a system for keeping them on track and forcing themselves to take the necessary steps to guarantee their success.

Here are some helpful thoughts / systems for you:

1.)  Every single morning when you walk into your facility…focus on and implement AT LEAST 1 idea so that you, your staff or your product (the instruction) OVERDELIVERS.  Make sure that you document it so that you can make it part of your standard operating procedures.

2.)  Every single day, set it as your minimum goal to generate at least one referral….that means go ahead and ASK.  My grandmother always told me, “Jason, if you don’t ask…the answer is always NO.”  Smart Lady!

3.)  In the “members only” area of your website, you really need an automated system to generate and collect referrals from your current members.  (FYI – the folks who are currently working with me and my team on their sites, are getting this system for free)

4.)  It’s imperative that once you generate the referrals that you have a simple to use, automated system to follow up with them (if they don’t join when you call them the first time).  This can be easily done using any of the autoresponder / CRM software out there – if you need any help on that, drop me a note.

5.)  You absolutely, positively MUST collect and USE testimonials or “social proof” in all of your marketing…it’s really just that important.  Keep in mind that “what you say about your program is good…what THEY say about your program is GOLD.

Hello and Happy Friday!

As many people in the industry have heard, I recently went through double hernia surgery.  All I can say about that…is…OUCH!  I’m starting to heal…slowly but surely, though it’s been a rough go of it.  Thanks to everybody who’s reached out to me wondering where I’ve been for the past couple of weeks.  Not to worry, it takes more than a few holes in my abdomen to keep me down 🙂

Hey Everybody!  Happy Friday.

It’s been a good week!  Actually, the other night, my daughter Tallie (2 years old going on 34) says to me “daddy…yicks!” which, in case you don’t speak toddler, means, “Daddy, let’s go outside and practice some Eskrima so I can develop my character as well as my athletic abilities”  (at least, that’s what I believe it means!)  You can see this in effect to the right…and yes, that’s Noah (age 10 months) hanging out in the backpack…his turn is coming soon!

Last week I shared one way to make sure that you are communicating successfully with the parents of your students and providing them with high quality information that they actually WANT TO READ.  Remember, lack of communication is a LEADING CAUSE OF PROGRAM CANCELLATION.  Don’t let this happen!

This week, I’d like to share with you a few examples that you can AND SHOULD be modeling as easy marketing and retention strategies.  We all need marketing and retention strategies in our businesses, don’t we?

Now, if you have all the students you want, waiting lists a mile long for each of your classes, and a bank account with endless funds, you probably won’t need to implement this.  If, however, you are a real business owner, I’m confident that you’ll find these examples helpful and that implementation will do your school (and your bank account) some good.

Our House was Robbed…for real.

Yes, the title of this post is 100% true. Absolutely amazing to me that people will look you in the face, smile, and then STEAL from you.

The details that I can share right now (it’s an active police / court case at the moment) is the following:


Dr. Robyn and I hired a temporary babysitter for 2 part time days. She was fabulous with the kids, very sweet…and…she had previously been a professional housekeeper, so she volunteered to do some cleaning during our kids’ nap time. (She did some cleaning alright…)

The second day that she was here, she was doing some cleaning upstairs (I was in my home-office downstairs) when she came down and said that she had received a text from her mom and that she had to leave immediately as her mom needed a ride due to car trouble. Being a trusting person (I do run a Character Development company, right?), I simply paid her for her time, thanked her for her help and let her know that we’d be happy to give her some more work as she was a young, single, soon to be mom.

Long story short, Dr. Robyn came home and was getting dressed to go out when she noticed that some of her favorite pieces of jewelry were GONE. At first we thought perhaps the tiny fingers of our toddler Tallie may have misplaced them, however, it would have been impossible for her to get to them due to their location. Realizing that the ONLY person to have been where the jewelry was, was this sitter, we contacted her and she quickly said that she didn’t see any jewelry while cleaning.

After ripping the house apart (again), at 8pm, we called the police department who immediately dispatched 2 cruisers to our home to take a statement and get all of the details…they were very thorough and very professional. Makes me feel a lot safer to be a resident of this town! They left an hour or so later and told us that they’d get right on it and contact us as soon as they discovered anything.

At 1am, the phone rang and the Police Officer let me know that they had already questioned the babysitter and she had confessed to stealing the jewelry and selling it at a pawn shop. She was “processed” and released and a court date set for this week…


At this point in time, we’re waiting (and hoping) to hear that the police will be able to recover Dr. Robyn’s jewelry from the pawn shop…I’ll shoot you an update as soon as I know.

So, in the hopes of turning our day around and spreading some positivity, I thought I’d share something cool that a bunch of our clients are doing with regards to a secret “ninja” marketing tool.

How to avoid communication problems with parents of your students

Hope you’re having a great day today. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping and I’m thrilled to say that we’ve hired a replacement nanny…so we are finally able to get back to work (during the day, that is!). It’s been really crazy around here! Juggling 2 young kids, our businesses and sometimes even, gulp, SLEEP…has been interesting 🙂

In any case, I wanted to share something with you today…I just got off the phone with a school owner who sounded totally deflated and defeated. His student count is down and his morale and passion for his school appears to have taken a serious beating. Seems that he’s been having some issues with a few of the parents of his students. He told me that he feels like teaching the students is an absolute pleasure, however, dealing with the parents is driving him nuts. SOUND FAMILIAR?

After a couple of quick questions, the problem was pretty darn clear.


A lack of helpful, positive communication can have devastating repercussions (both in personal relationships as well as at your school).

Many school owners ONLY communicate with the parents of their students when THEY WANT MORE MONEY FROM THEM…Folks, this will devastate the relationship you’re trying to build with them…GUARANTEED!

We discussed creating a monthly communication campaign inclusive of 6 e-mails / blog posts (you could do more, however, this felt right) that was completely BENEFIT DRIVEN so that the parents are actually looking forward to receiving it. (Earth shattering idea, right?)

One of the first pieces of positive communication we strongly urge our Powerful Words Family Members to share with their clients (and their prospective clients) is the Monthly Parents Perch letter. The reason this is such a successful tool is that each and every month, it reminds parents about the promises that were made during the initial enrollment conference…and EXACTLY how those promises are being fulfilled. Why “Free Stuff” can cost you BIG TIME!

I just had a very disturbing phone call from a soon to be brand new Powerful Words family member.  What was so disturbing you ask?

He’s owned his school for 3 years now and has been using a “version of a character program that he gets for free.”  Listen, I know that some folks feel comfortable using something that they haven’t invested in, even if they know it’s not top quality.

The reason he called me was pretty simple.  He was FED UP.  He’s been waiting and waiting for his “version of a character program that he gets for free” to be made available to him for the month.  The problem was that it wasn’t made available to him until Feb 5th (per my calendar, that makes it 5 days AFTER the month has begun) and therefore was unable to either prepare with the materials, use them in his monthly marketing, or even be able to deliver them to his clients on time…as they rightly deserve! (we always get our materials out on the 20th of the previous month to ensure that this NEVER HAPPENS to our clients!)

Punctuality is a form of respect.  I’ve always felt that if somebody doesn’t respect my time, it’s clear that they don’t respect me!

This soon to be brand new Powerful Words family member said, “You know Jason, I’ve put up with numerous typos, poorly written chats, materials that are not appropriate for all of my students, and a less than attractive package.  But I figured that since it wasn’t costing me anything, it was probably good enough.  Well – today, it cost me.  It cost me an unpleasant conversation with a parent who is “concerned that we might not be serious about our program if we can’t even manage to deliver it to them on time.  If she pulls her kids out, it’s going to cost me well over $2,000 per year.”

Ouch.  That, quite frankly…sucks.

This conversation really pissed me off.  I had to take a few minutes to write this down and let you know that if, for some reason, you’re currently in a similar situation to this fellow and using a program that was NOT created by the #1 Child Development Expert in the Industry, or using something that you get that’s “included for free” with something else you purchase…that it may, in fact, be costing you.
